Bangmoe Village was selected as the first village for the “Stories of Our Neighborhoods” because the power of the people from the Joseon Dynasty led to the spirit of Gwangju that was demonstrated in May 1980. The Samgangmun Gate of the Yang family clan of Bakmoe Village is a window to the rich history of a virtuous family that many people do not know about. The Samgangmun Gate of the Yang family clan has been designated as Gwangju Monument No. 11. It is a jeongnyeo (monument) erected to commemorate the achievements of the Yang family members, who died while fighting against the Japanese in the Battle of Jinjuseong during Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592). In the village, there is a 423-year-old camellia tree of Hanlin Academy. It is said that this camellia tree was planted by the eldest granddaughter Uimodang of Go Gyeong-myeong, a commander of the righteous army. Bangmoe Village in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju is known as the home of the righteous army. Men from Honam joined the righteous army to fight the Japanese troops in Jinju, even though they were not masterful fighters, and they demonstrated their fearlessness and devotion to their country in battle. While men fought on the battlefield, Uimodang dedicated herself to maintaining the honor of her family and praying for the fate of the country. While sitting in the pavilion of Bangmoe Village, nestled in the foothills of the tranquil Eodeungsan Mountain, next to the Hwangnyonggang River and vast fields, you will be able to imagine the righteous army walking toward their imminent deaths for their country and take a moment to pray for their souls.

With Baengmasan Mountain at the back and Geungnakgang River flowing through the rolling plains in the front, Seochang Folk Village is known for its geographically ideal location. Formed in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, the village was once called "Sedong Village," named after General Kim Se-geun who was an active member of the Righteous Army during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. Originally, it was a traditional village consisting of hanok (traditional Korean houses); in the 2000s, however, the area was made into a traditional village for visitors to experience traditional farm life in the countryside. Seochang Folk Village is also famous as the venue of the annual Mandeuri Harvesting Ritual.

Sihwa Culture Village in Munhwa-dong, Buk-gu is an exemplary village built by some 17,000 residents as a citizen autonomy committee of 24 residents and their participation, communication, and organic cooperation. Although the gateway to Gwangju, Munhwa-dong was once a nameless suburban area. By cultivating a unique culture, however, it has been transformed into Korea's most beautiful city today. In 2007, the village ranked No. 1 in the "Making the City We Want to Live" category and won the grand prize at the National Citizen Autonomy Expo. Munhwa-dong is currently being benchmarked by many towns and visited by students from all over the country.

Songjeong Kkoburang Donghwa (Children's Story) Village is where you can encounter the characters from children's books that you enjoyed reading as a kid. Songjeong Kkoburang Donghwa Village is just a 5-minute walk from 1913 Songjeong Station Market. It was established to build local identity and create a lively atmosphere. The murals and sculptures of the main characters in foreign children's stories as well as murals of folktales and legends of Gwangsan-gu can be seen along the alleys. Visit with your children and have fun exploring the murals in the alleyways.

On the wall next to the Penguin Bread Cafe run by the Yangnim Penguin Village Cooperative in Yangnim-dong, there is a mural of J-Hope, who has grown into a world-class pop artist as a member of BTS. It was painted as a special surprise for the artist, and the event was organized by Chinese fans of BTS to celebrate J-Hope's birthday in his hometown of Gwangju. Now, it is expected to be in the spotlight as a new tourist attraction in Yangnim-dong and become crowded with visitors standing next to the mural of J-Hope to take photos.

With various modern architectural buildings and a forest of trees over 100 years old, Yangnim-dong is a living museum of history, architecture, culture, and art. During the Japanese Occupation, the foreign missionary built churches, schools, and hospitals in Yangrim-dong; thus earning for the area nicknames like "Jerusalem of Gwangju" and "Occidental Village." Early Christian relics and traditional Korean sites remain just as they were in the old days along narrow alleys; lining Minsok-gil are traditional hanok homes including the House of Choe Seung-hyo and the House of Yi Jang-u.
