Hanul Madang is located in the Asia Culture Center, a landmark of Gwangju, known as the capital of culture. It is like an urban park with a grassy hill that is the size of a soccer field established on an artificial structure. At sunset, it turns into a picnic spot where young adults come to enjoy chicken, pizza, and beer that they’ve bought from downtown Chungjang-ro. In autumn, the silvergrass photo zone leading up Rooftop Garden is a perfect place to take pictures with your friends or significant other. ACC Hanul Madang is a unique and beautiful park where you can enjoy a leisurely break in the heart of Gwangju

Situated near the Gwangju World Cup Stadium, Pungam Lake is smaller compared to other lakes or reservoirs. Despite its size, its landscape is stunning all year round as it is surrounded by an age-old pine forest and the water is clear and deep. Thus, Pungam Lake attracts many citizens who enjoy walking or are just looking for a beautiful place to rest and take in the scenery. Very well-organized convenience facilities, sculptural works, and rose gardens around the lake are the reasons why the lake has long been loved by citizens.

It is dedicated to Gobong Gi Dae-seung, a neo-Confucian scholar in the mid-Joseon Dynasty, and is located in Gwanggok Village on the foothills of Baegusan Mountain. It was built in 1607 (40th year of King Seonjo’s reign over Joseon) by Gi Hyo-jeung, the eldest son of Gi Dae-seung, in memory of his father, and it was relocated and repaired by the descendants of Gi Dae-seung in 1938. Wolbongseowon Confucian Academy was originally built in Nagam (present-day Sinnyong-dong) in 1578 (11th year of King Seonjo’s reign), seven years after Gobong’s death, but it was destroyed during Imjinwaeran (Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592) and it was rebuilt in Dongcheon (present-day Sanwol-dong). Then, in 1868, it was demolished when Daewongun ordered the abolition of Confucian academies. Then, Bingwoldang was newly built at the present location in 1941. Then, the construction of the shrine, Jangpangak, three inner gates, and three outer gates began in 1978 and was completed in 1981. It is said that the name of Bingwoldang was bestowed by King Jeongjo with the meaning of “Bingwolseolwol (氷月雪月),” symbolizing the learning and virtues of Gobong. Bingwoldang is currently located at the site of the original head house of the Gi family clan in Gwanggok Village at the foot of Baegusan Mountain, and it faces the west on a high ground. The surrounding area is lush with pine trees, so the scenery is absolutely stunning and it is quiet and serene in the area. * Buildings and Structures of Bingwoldang * The original buildings were relocated or reconstructed by the descendants, and the building that had been destroyed were restored. The buildings restored by descendants are as follows: - Sadang (shrine): A building with a hip-and-gable roof with 3 kan on the front and 2 kan and a half on the sides (41.98 m²) - Gangdang (lecture hall): A building with a hip-and-gable roof with 7 kan on the front and 3 kan on the side. One kan on each side is a toegan (quadrangular aisle attached), and there is toenmaru (narrow wooden porch running along the outside of a room) on the front side and on the right side. There is an ondol (heated flooring system) room on the left side and there is a wooden floor hall with umulmaru. (84.29 m²) - Jangpangak: There are two Jangpangak buildings on the right side of Bingwoldang, with the original one on the right side and a newly built one on the left. The original one is gable-roofed with one kan on the front and on the sides each, while the new building is gable-roofed with three kan on the front and one kan on the sides. The total floor area of the two buildings is 26.44 m². The new Jangpangak contains 474 wood printing blocks for Gobongjip, Nonsarok, Wangbokseo, and Igiwangbokseo. - Naesammun (three inner gates): Three gable-roofed gates within three kan on the front and one kan on the sides. (13.55 m²) - Oesammun (three outer gates): Three gates similar to the inner three gates (12.56 m²) Originally, Wolbongseowon Confucian Academy was given its signboard in 1655 (6th year of King Hyojong’s reign), and it was equipped with Sau, Dongje - Myeongseongje, Seoje - Jongseongje, and auditorium - Chungsindang. The tablet name of Wolbongsewon Confucian Academy was Isanno, and the rest of the tablets were written by Song Jun-gil. The signboards are currently housed in Jangpangak. * Gi Dae-seung, a Master of Neo-Confucianism in the Mid-Joseon Dynasty * Gobong Gi Dae-seung (1527 to 1572) was a master of neo-Confucianism in the mid-Joseon Dynasty. He was born in Songhyeon-dong, Sogoryong-ri, Gwangju (present-day Sinnyong-dong, Gwangsan-gu), as the second eldest son of a neo-Confucian scholar Gi Jin. He studied under the tutelage of Yi Toe-gye and Kim Ha-seo, and he became well-respected for presenting a new doctrine that surprised his predecessors. The Sachirigiron, referring to the correspondence he had with Lee Toe-gye on the subject of Sadanchiljeong, is especially well-known. He passed the civil official examination in 1558 and served as Jongsagwan, Jibui, Jeonhan, and Ubuseungji. In 1572, he was promoted to Daesagan, but he resigned his post due to an illness, and died at the age of 45 on his way back home. - Owner: Haengju Gi family clan - Quantity: Entire area - Scale: Shrine, Bingwoldang, Jangpangak (2 buildings), three inner gates, and three outer gates [Cultural Property Information] - Designated property: Gwangju Monument No. 9 - Designated date: August 3, 1979 - Period: Joseon <Source: Korea Tourism Organization>
