The Gwangju Biennale Pavilion has contributed greatly to the promotion of the arts in Korea and the world by hosting countless exhibitions since its establishment in 1994. It serves as a gateway to advance into the world for Korean artists, in addition to bringing joy to countless people and enriching their lives through the biennale. Various attempts are being made to enhance the brand value of Gwangju, the home of the biennale, and to turn the biennale into a sustainable platform, rather than just a one-time event. During the COVID-19 pandemic, online services were offered for people who were unable to visit in person to check out the exhibitions remotely. Sangrok Exhibition Hall is located at 1165, Sangmu-daero, Seo-gu, Gwangju, formerly the governor's official residence in south Jeolla Province. Built in March 1982, the building was often called "The Provincial Blue House" as it was used as a residence of former presidents Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo when they visited Gwangju during the Fifth and Sixth Republic. However, as time passed and history was reevaluated, the function of the building changed. Following both the public and private sectors' demands to return to the citizens the beautiful green area made by the government's park project, the building site was re-established as Sangnok Neighborhood Park. Meanwhile, the former governor's official residence was transformed into a cultural space in the wood. As the city needed an exhibition space for the culture-focused infrastructure, the building officially became Sangrok Exhibition Hall in June 2006 and operated as the annex of the Gwangju Museum of Art. The annex offers citizens opportunities to experience and enjoy a wider range of culture through art exhibitions, cultural events, and educational programs. Along with the Gwangju Museum of Art, Sangrok Exhibition Hall has exerted its best efforts to further fortify the status of Gwangju as a culture-focused city. The first floor has Galleries 1-3, storage, the office, the archive, a lounge, and a cafeteria; the second floor has Galleries 4-5, the Seminar Room (Special Gallery), and storage.
