Gwangju Folly Gwangju Folly is a place that brings fresh air to the city and a place for people to relax and contemplate away from the hustle and bustle. In architecture, a folly is an ornamental building that has lost its intended function. However, Gwangju Folly refers to architecture that can contribute to urban regeneration by serving as a pavilion, fulfilling the public functions of street facilities, as well as the ornamental role of follies. Rather than acting as individual units within the city, Gwangju Folly buildings form a cluster and a unified pattern to exert their influence. The follies, which will bridge people and their surrounding environment in the city, will add cultural power to the old downtown area of Gwangju, which has grown rapidly over the past 40 years and experienced urban sprawl, thereby driving urban regeneration. ■ Gwangju Folly I - Director_ Seung Hyo-sang - Curators_ Kim Yeong-jun and Raynham Pratt - Program period: October 2010 to December 2011 - Participating artists: 11 teams from 6 countries Gwangju Folly, launched in Gwangju in 2011, refers to the designs of urban public facilities planned as part of the 4th Gwangju Design Biennale. A total of 11 works were installed around the old eupseong town wall site.
