There is a traditional house designated as being of cultural value in Yangrim-dong, Nam-gu (South district), Gwangju city. It is Lee Jangwu house, Gwangju Cultural Properties No. 1. When talk about traditional houses, we usually think of a tile or thatch roofed house. However, the people of old who lived close to nature made full use of their houses, which had many rooms. Many generations lived, married, worked and passed away in these houses. Because of this, traditional houses consist either of three ordinary rooms with a courtyard, or just four to five ordinary rooms. These are the simple types of houses. They have a room on each side of the master room, a covered balcony along the length of the three rooms, and a kitchen. However Lee Jangwu house, located in Yangrim-dong Folk Road, is not one of the simple types of houses. It is a grand and splendid house like might have belonged to one of the rich or powerful. It was originally the house of Jeong Byeongho, built in 1899, and Lee Jangwu bought it in 1965 and maintained it. The house consists of a detached house and servants’ quarters as the living space for men and the main building in the shape of an ‘ㄱ’ for the women. It has a Chinese character eight (八)-shaped tile roof of the sort the old Korean nobilities used to inhabit. The property is about 1,600㎡ in size and has the outer gate as well as an inner gate. Passing the outer gate are the front 4 rooms of mens’ dwelling and the servants’ quarters, crowned with a Chinese character eight (八)-shaped tile roof that looks like un unfolded Chinese fan. There is a big pool and a hundred year old ginkgo tree in the yard, showing the lifestyle of the people of those days. There is also the main, ‘ㄱ’ shaped building and a large yard. The main building is a large, grand wooden construction, with a wooden verandah, a side room, the main room, an inner room, a kitchen on the left hand side and four smaller rooms arranged on the right hand side. Entry into the bedrooms, each installed with under-floor heating, is from the covered balcony, and is through a set of doors a hinged door on the outside and a sliding door on the inside. Round and square pillars support the main building, making it more stable. There is also a big warehouse consisting of four rooms at the back-right side of the main building and showing of the riches of the family.
