Gwangju Biennale, an international modern arts festival, held biennially, was introduced to celebrate the fifty restoration of independence and the year of art in 1995. Its purpose is to sublimate the spirit of May 18 Democratic Movement into a new culture and promote Korean art culture and the tradition of Gwangju art culture. Gwangju Biennale has tried to take its role as the central axis of culture production as a part of globalization in the global age that respects the spirit of the nation based on the tradition of art. Furthermore, Gwangju Biennale has been extending cultural communication through the exchange of art among many countries "for the cultural community in the Pacific Age, the creation of equal history between the eastern world and the western world, and the active movement of Asian culture in the 21st century". Therefore, the exchange of international modern art from Gwangju, the city of culture and democracy, extends throughout Asia to the rest of the world. It is held for three months every two year in the cultural belt area of Jungoe Park under the joint sponsorship of Gwangju Metropolitan City and Gwangju Biennale Foundation. Gwangju Biennale also organizes the special program and the international science council which reflects and talks the anthropologic, social and cultural agenda of modern world and the future value through the international modern art festival. The Biennale hall as the main stage and other several sections in accordance with the supervisor's direction, concept and way of production exhibit about one hundred art works of eighty through one hundred foreign and domestic artists from thirty five countries. Some exhibitions or programs are dividingly exhibited or hosted at various places of Gwangju Metropolitan City. As the time passes, it arranges several participating events or programs for the participants to experience, feel and enjoy the modern art culture on the spot. The international science council invites world great scholars and connects the exhibition to the aesthetic discussion for the further creative development of art culture. This is another aspect of Gwangju Biennale as a mental culture together with a visual image through the exhibition of art works.
